Why I Love to Crochet!

Crocheting is more than just an old hobby passed down from grandmothers to granddaughters. It is an art form that connects people from all walks of life with its rich history and diverse cultural origins. For me, crochet has brought a sense of calm and focus into my life that I never knew I needed. In this blog post, I will share with you the history and significance of crochet, how I discovered my love for it, and provide some helpful tips for those just starting out on their own crochet journey.

The History and Significance of Crochet

Crochet has been around for centuries, with the earliest known patterns dating back to the 1800s. Historically, crochet was used to make practical items, such as socks and hats, but it has evolved into an artistic form of self-expression in modern times. Crochet is found in many cultures around the world, including South America, Asia, and Europe. It has been used to create intricate lace designs, colorful blankets, and even jewelry.

How I Discovered My Love for Crochet

I was first introduced to crochet by my grandmother who would spend hours making beautiful blankets and scarves. I was fascinated by the intricate patterns and the way the yarn seemed to flow effortlessly through her fingers. It wasn't until I was in my late 20s that I rediscovered my love for crochet. It was during a time in my life where I was feeling overwhelmed with work and personal stress. One day, I met a coworker who crocheted while working at an afterschool program. She was making a beautiful multicolored kufi and I asked if what it would take for us to start a class for the kids. I picked up a crochet hook, a ball of yarn, and a crochet pattern book and I started to eventually create something beautiful through my practice. I immediately felt a sense of calm come over me and I knew that crochet would become a significant part of my life.

How to Get Started with Crochet

Getting started with crochet may seem daunting at first, but it is actually quite simple. All you need is a crochet hook, yarn, and a few basic stitches. There are many resources available online, including YouTube tutorials and beginner patterns. I recommend starting with a simple project, such as a scarf or a dishcloth, to get the hang of the basic stitches. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, as they are a part of the learning process.

The Benefits of Crocheting

Crocheting has many benefits, including increasing focus, relaxation, and mindfulness. When you are focused on a crochet project, you are fully present in the moment and your mind is free from distractions. Crocheting can also help reduce stress and anxiety, as it allows you to slow down and focus on something positive. Many people also find that crochet provides a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment.

My Favorite Projects and Techniques

There are so many different projects and techniques in crochet that it is impossible to choose just one favorite. Some of my go-to projects include blankets, scarves, and hats. One of my favorite stitches is the Catherine's Wheel. It was the first crochet stitch I remember seeing as a kid and instantly mesmerized at its beauty. I also enjoy learning new techniques and honing my stitch skills, such as the Tunisian crochet stitch or the amigurumi technique for making cute little animals. The best part about crochet is that there is always something new to learn and create.
